Stravinsky's ballet scores helped reshape orchestral music in the early 20th century. Petrushka blends folk-inspired melodies, vivid rhythms, and shifting orchestral textures to tell the story of a puppet brought to life, while The Firebird is celebrated for its glowing colors and dramatic finale. Hearing both works together offers a striking overview of Stravinsky's imaginative musical language.

The Boston Symphony Orchestra's performances of this program are scheduled for February 25–27, 2027, with the February 27 concert marking the final listed date at the hall. Andris Nelsons is known for conducting repertoire across a wide range of musical periods, and this pairing gives the orchestra a chance to showcase both its expressive range and its ensemble precision. Specific opening acts have not been listed.
